The Inaugural Derrick Bell Lecture Series: Examining Issues of Race and Diversity

Presented by the University of Oregon Law School, the Oregon Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, and the United States District Court

Keynote Presentation: 12:00-1:30
Prof. Ian Haney-López, University of California, Berkley Law

Dog Whistle Racism: Race + Politics in 2012
Two themes dominate American politics today – at the forefront is declining economic opportunity and coursing underneath is race. This talk connects the two. In the last fifty years, dog whistle politics has driven broad swaths of voters to adopt a self-defeating hostility toward government, and in the process remade the very nature of race and racism. American politics today – and the crisis of the middle class – simply cannot be understood without recognizing the powerful role of coded racial appeals.

Panel Discussion: 1:30-3:30
Educational Opportunities Post-Fisher

The fate of affirmative action in our universities will be decided this term by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Fisher case. Our distinguished panel will discuss what the elimination of affirmative action enforcement may mean for our communities, as well as ways to promote educational opportunities in a post-Fisher world.
